Protected Animal's Trade Still Rife Despite Frequent Raids

Wahyoe Boediwardhana , THE JAKARTA POST , MALANG, EAST JAVA Mon, 10/26/2009 1:43

East Java has become the province with the highest rate of protected animals trading activity. Indonesian Pro Fauna found 183 animals from 25 species of protected animals sold at bird market. Not only endangered birds, they also sold primates, mammals and raptors there. Moreover, Central Java such as Surakarta, Ambarawa and Semarang, have the same rank of illegal trading of the protective animals. All of this happened since the law enforcement is poor, even though Indonesia was famous for its rich fauna. About 515 species of mammals, 600 species of reptiles, and 15 percent of all insect species in the world, also three quarters of all fish species can be found in Indonesia. Based on regulation No.5/1990 on the conservation of natural resources and its ecosystem, protected animal traders could be jailed for five years and fined up Rp 100,000,000.

The sea level rise in Indonesia's is up by 1 meter by 2010. Our ocean currents will eventually change as well. These changes, according to a recent Center for a New American Security report, will affect surface and undersea navigation, and possibly affect ship operation and maintenance, engines and other equipment.
On the surface, severe weather events will certainly affect operations, training and maintenance. The possible damage to our ports from high wind and waves. Extreme weather will also take a damagel on our sailors' physical and mental strength, and high heat may strain deck crews on our future landing platform docks.
Underwater acoustical properties will be influenced as well, and by implication, so will the use of sonar-based detection - a key tool in any naval operation, especially in anti-submarine warfare, which we intend to develop.
Aside from these operational impacts, defense energy efficiency will also be a critical issue in the coming years as energy prices. This may further strain our defense budget and may exacerbate tradeoffs in funding for military operations, training, assistance and maintenance, especially when extreme environmental conditions increases.

Definition, Causes, effect of flood and Flood Safety

What is a flood?
A form of natural disaster when there is more water than the lakes, rivers, oceans, or ground can hold.
Many different types of floods
Named for how often they occur
There're 10 years floods,
100 years floods,
500 years floods,
Monsoon floods
Causes and Effects:
Too much rain
Excessive melting of snow
Too much water for the ground to absorb water
Ice or other objects block the flow of the river
Damage property and homes
Kill people and animals
Communities in flood zones must be rebuilt with proper flood controlling equipment.
Flood Safety
Have knowledge on it
Flood watch and flood warning
Flood watch: "flooding [that] is possible within a certain area"
Flood warning: "a flood [that] is imminent or one that has already been reported".
Recognize environmental clues that indicate an upcoming flood

Endangered Animals_Orangutans

Indonesia is famous for its great biodiversity. It is estimated that as many as 300,000 animal species are inhabit its many ecosystems. This is approximately 17% of worldwide fauna species, and across only 1.3% of the world's landmass. With 515 species, Indonesia has more species of mammal than any other nation. There are 1539 bird species and 50% of the entire world's fish species can be found in its marine and freshwater systems.
However, Indonesia also has the most endangered species. The World Conservation Union (IUCN, 2003) lists as endangered 147 mammals, 114 birds, 91 fish and etc. Major conservation efforts are very important if these species are not to become extinct in the near future. Trade in wild animals is a serious threat to many species in Indonesia. Over 95% of animals sold in markets are taken directly from the wild and not from captive breeding stocks. More than 20% of animals sold at market die in transportation. Thus, many endangered and protected species are traded freely, with the rarer species commanding higher prices.

Orang Utan
Causes and Effect: Walk through one of Jakarta's bird markets is like a living gallery of endangered species. We can see the truly endangered species like orangutans, gibbons, and even siamangs. Usually, those animals are only for views and entertainments but now, it’s even for sale. The Orangutans that only left with the number of 4,000 on the of Sumatra today are for sale as pets

Frequently, Orangutans are kept only until they're 5 years old, while they become strong enough to be kept as pets or restore to their habitat. After people order for a species, it needs about 3 days for the hunter to capture the animal. The hunters usually shoot a mother with a baby. When the mother falls, they grab the baby and sell it.

Possible Action: Groups or organizations such as ProFauna tried to conserve Sumatran Orangutan, work on their habitat, stop the animal trading and preserve the future generation. Besides, Indonesia itself also works to conserve natural resources. Unfortunately, some corruption, illegal logging and the plantation of palm oil refuse on holding hands. The other fact that the government must put in their consideration is poverty. Animal trapping often reach its peak while poor families must find the money to pay school fees for their children. Thus, increasing their economic status and giving education about conservation will lower hunting and trading habit.
